Community Swap Shop began as a new way for people to buy, sell and swap local goods and services. But since the early summer of 2008 when the idea came to us, the world has changed and global economic conditions have deteriorated. As a result, the site is a timely and important tool to encourage members of local communities to help themselves and those around them.
Community Swap Shop offers members the ease and convenience of being able to list their unwanted goods for sale with a little extra, the “swap box”. When a listing is created, the seller is offered the option to list items s/he would be willing to trade for. Buyers can then either negotiate with the seller to purchase the item or propose a trade through the swap box. Listings include space for up to four pictures and a description of 250 characters. If a seller wishes, s/he can choose to purchase an enhanced listing, which offers space for up to eight pictures, a description of 1000 characters and a highlighted listing.
In addition to focusing on local buying, selling and trading, Community Swap Shop also features a section for listing local services. Much like the listings for goods, local business owners can list their business under their specific category, and members can search for a needed service through the Local Business Directory. Opportunities to post and view local job listings and real estate listings will be available soon. Throughout the year, Community Swap Shop will feature “events”, such as a prom dress swap in the early spring and a plant swap in the fall.
We ask that as you go about the business of doing business that you do so locally first. Support your local farmer, your local artist, your local stores and service providers. Small business encompasses the mainstay of the American economy and by supporting these folks you stimulate your own local economy, cut down on the use of fossil fuels through less shipping and eat healthier, fresher and locally produced foods. Please see important links in our People Helping People box on your Main Page.
A portion of proceeds generated from featured listings and advertisements will fund a non profit charitable organization and community outreach activities. Community Swap Shop’s founders hope that “by encouraging a deeper focus on the local level, we will have some impact on global efforts for improving the environment, healthy living and the happiness and well-being of our friends and neighbors”.
